WMV Files on Mac

The UPS streaming media server streams files in a format known as WMV. If we have digitized film for you for streaming into the classroom, you will typically be emailed links to the film that look like this:

mms://media.ups.edu:554/data/faculty/jdoe/yourmovie1.wmv

Notice that the URL begins with the letters “mms” instead of “http” but that is normal. You can put this link anywhere you would normally put a web page link, e.g. in a Blackboard External Link section.

This WMV format will run natively on any Windows machine, but the Mac, which uses Quicktime format, needs a simple plugin to help it do so. This plugin is called Flip4Mac and is free and simple to install.
